Who We Are
Kingston Hydro
Kingston Hydro licensed by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to provide electricity distribution services in
central Kingston. It owns the wires, poles, transformers and meters that bring electricity from the Provincial
electricity transmission grid to your door, and charges OEB-approved rates designed to cover its ongoing
capital and
operational costs plus a reasonable deemed rate of return.
Kingston Hydro has two affiliates:
The City of Kingston
The City of Kingston is the sole shareholder of Kingston Hydro. Its interests are represented by Kingston’s City Councilors,
who hold voting rights exercised at shareholders’ meetings, appoint the board of directors, and provide direction to
Kingston Hydro in the best interests of the community we serve. Kingston Hydro pays dividends to the City of
Kingston, the amount and timing of which are determined by the board of directors.
The City of Kingston and Kingston Hydro also share some corporate services, such as common treasury, in order
to reduce costs for Kingston Hydro customers. In addition, the City of Kingston provides some services to Kingston
Hydro under contract, including leasing of office and operational facilities, communications and customer service support.
Utilities Kingston
Utilities Kingston is owned by Ontario Corporation #1425447 which is in turn wholly owned by the City of
Kingston. Utilities Kingston provides asset management, billing, and operational services to utilities in
the water and wastewater, natural gas, and electricity industries. It also owns and operates appliance rental
and fibre optic network businesses.
Utilities Kingston provides asset management, billing, and operational services to Kingston Hydro under
contract. Utilities Kingston’s ability to build economies of scale by providing services to all locally owned
utilities generates significant cost savings for Kingston Hydro customers.
